I was in London a while ago, and made a DJ set at Larry T’s Super electric Party machine at East bloc. One of my friends was kind of sleepy, so she took a little nap in the club. When she woke up, a half naked sweaty gay on x asked her “Am I Basic?” We had a good laugh, but recently being basic has become the thing not to be. Of course I have never been basic, have you? But what is being basic? I must confess  that for the first time In my life I might be becoming a bit basic.

My column this week has a double story, but it started with a thought about my grandmother. My grandmother bought quality clothing, which was expensive, but she wore it for at least ten years, maybe even more. When she passed away a few years ago, I took al lot of her clothes, bed linen etcetera from her house to prevent it from going in the bin or to the goodwill store. The clothes are stacked in my studio, and sometimes I re-use something. I realised this week that a lot of people buy clothing in bulk, almost like a daily consumption.

I don’t really like functional clothing. In my designs I often forget to put in pockets, and I don’t do buttons. Often when I’m out, I need a purse because to stuff an I-phone, a wallet AND a packet of cigarettes in your undies is just a bit too much. When I cycle around, I sometimes cycle behind a beige/grey/green persona oozing functionality, and the feeling that gives me is best described as a punch in the stomach. One functional piece of clothing could do, but from head-to-toe in practical outerwear just gives me the creeps. How functional can you get?

Last week I went rummaging on the flea market, and I was thrilled to find a vintage Pierre Cardin pencil case. Just what I needed to put in my drawing pens. Funny though that the excitement about my find was based on the magic of the name Pierre Cardin. Whilst watching television I saw a commercial about designer glasses, and that you get two for the price of one, what a deal. I was wondering why it was so special that they specifically mentioned that even designer glasses were being offered two for the price of one.

For the last few years my fascination for illustration accelerated to a higher level. The enjoyment of making enthusiastic and sensible drawings gives me great pleasure. After joining forces with illustration agent Angelique Hoorn earlier this year and my weekly column for online illustration magazine “Dash”, matter .of material will show a thrilling selection of my illustrations in a two-month during sales exhibition.

I am a sucker for plants; I love them and cherish them. Every now and then I pick up an orphan plant from the streets, one that is neglected, almost dying and left with the garbage. Some of my plants have been with with me already for ten years, and from my most favourite plant I take cuttings and plant them to grow them into baby plants to gift to friends and share the joy. I even have some plant friends with whom we share plant cuttings – it is a great hobby.

What is in your wallet? Pin or cash? Carrots or a back rub?

For this year's Wool Week, Bas Kosters collaborated with Granny's Finest to make a special creation, inspired by the 'Geitenwollensok'.

The 'Geitenwollensok' is surrounded by stories and associations. Thus, the wool of the goat has nothing to do with the authentic sock, but this animal is associated in historical writing with small farmers and farm labourers.

The end of the year is getting nearer, when the days get shorter, and we go towards the holidays, is it not time for reminiscing and thinking how to help our fellow man? This month November, to me is all about Movember. I am participating in this men’s health initiative for the second year. By growing my moustache, and raising funds, I try to help raise awareness for men’s health issues. I am glad that the big moustache trend has flown over, and our moustache cups etcetera are in the back of the cupboard. That only means more focus on this sincere initiative.

Last week Bas Kosters launched a beautifull flower project in collaboration with the Dutch Flower Council (Mooiwatbloemendoen.nl). Fifteen male models, adorned in floral prints and outfits made out of real flowers, formed a spectacular image as a living art and fashion installation in a beautiful ballroom on the Herengracht in Amsterdam.

Last week an online interview about a project that I was working on was placed on a Dutch news forum, accompanied by several pictures of my work and myself. I know that you should not read the anonymous comments on news forums, but my brother said they were quite severe, so I could not help myself. And it turned out they were quite explicit. Explicit words and opinions about me, my work, what I said and the way I look. For a lot of reasons that was something I could not understand.
